Zero Sum Game

Wednesday, January 7, 2026

I'm usually guilty of posting early.  I'll mention that I have plans or goals or things mapped out and then they don't get done.  I'm great at making lists and plans and such, not so good at implementation.  Working on that.

Anyway, now that we're past five days in I can mention a current, kinda silly challenge that I have issued to myself.  Thirty days of no spending on food.  Through the end of January, I buy none.  No eating out, no trips to the grocery store, no indulgences.  Zero dollars.  It should be doable for a few reasons - I have lots of food on hand, I have no social obligations to my knowledge and it ties in with eating less.  So far it's only been a challenge once, at lunch yesterday when I was super pressed for time and didn't have anything super convenient.  Ordinarily I would have just grabbed a burger, but I fought it off and used the full 15 minutes I had to cook up eggs etc.  There is no doubt I will run out of some things - obvious ones are milk, hash browns, fresh fruits and vegetables.  Probably some others like beer.  I'm well stocked on eggs, cheese, lots of meat in the freezer, soup, potatoes, dry and canned goods.  The last week may be a little wild.  But so far I'm having fun with it.

Other than that, no real immediate objectives other than the related eat at home and also to really try and avoid binge events.  Sunday dinner was pushing it, otherwise things have been good.  And I haven't been notably hungry.  Meal sizes can shrink some, but so far so good.  A little exercise soon.

Scale down again, BP number meh.  Still losing water though that is slowing.  Finally.

Breakfast:  Cabot seriously sharp cheddar, orange juice, coffee

Again.  Cacao butter in coffee x1

Lunch:  3 eggs over medium in butter, 1 C spicy beans, 4 Smithfield sausage links

Delightful.  Terrible photo, since I only remembered halfway thru.  Last of the links, now on to a package of patties.

Dinner:  Soup, Spelt parmesan bready things, 12 oz Miller Lite

Changed my plan, which was to make a burger.  Not feeling it.  So I had soup.  Can confirm, this is the best batch of the soup I have ever made.  By far.  It is so good.  The bread things were improvised and mediocre.

And the capper once again, windmill cookies and whole milk.

Exercise:  Nope.  Maybe this weekend, probably not sooner.  I will note that yesterday was my best day with stairs in quite a while, was able to go up and down without hesitation and it wasn't a strain.  Not as great this morning, but still, progress.  A little less weight and some basic conditioning and I think I'll be good.
