Shortage Nearing Critical

Sunday, January 29, 2017

January is almost over.  Wow.  Went by so fast.  Things went off track and stayed there.  Now, about those vegetables.  I need to get some.

Breakfast:  Usual weekend fare, 2 eggs over medium, Alexia hash browns, Wright bacon

One bowl full of tasty.
Only a 7/10 today.  Bacon wasn't great, bad job by me.  I really should switch to doing it in the oven.

Lunch:  2 slices of homemade rye bread with butter, 2 Mac Jrs, some Cheez its, lemon cake with vanilla ice cream.

Dinner:  Roast beef with gravy, 4 cheese potatoes, carrots, roll with butter, sugar cookies, 12 oz Miller Lite

Exercise:  Nope.  Slug.

Veggie Shortage

Saturday, January 28, 2017

Happy weekend.  Very happy it is.

Diet remains terrible, all meat and fat and starch and sugar.  Plus no exercise.  Blergh.

Breakfast (sort of):  Some cheez its, Mac Jr, coffee

Slept in, took a long time to get motivated, eventually got cleaned up and left.

Lunch:  Five Guys little cheeseburger, little cajun fries with ketchup.  Also had some Snyders cheddar cheese pretzel bits at some point.

Was going to go to Qdoba.  They were out of guacamole.  Audibled.  Ketchup's a vegetable, right?  I didn't bother to take a picture because I've had this many times.

Dinner:  Leftover tri tip, mashed potatoes, a slice of homemade rye bread with butter

Not pictured:  Bread.
No veg.  I remembered too late that I had peas in the freezer.  I think.  Also, that was ONE potato.  Biggest russet potato I've ever seen, it was huge.

Oh yeah, bread.
There aren't too many better food things than bread fresh out of the oven.  That crunch.  Yum.

Dessert:  More PF lemon cake, vanilla ice cream

Better polish that off tomorrow and be done.

Exercise:  Nope

One Large Push Short

Friday, January 27, 2017

Sigh.  Just can't seem to make that big push to get rolling.

Dinner:  Pepperoni and bacon pizza, chunk of Pep Farm lemon cake with vanilla ice cream

Exercise:  Nope.

One Meal, Cooked at Home

Thursday, January 26, 2017

One tiny little step in the right direction.  And I mapped a few things out, too - just maybe I'll get it together yet.  Maybe.

Breakfast:  Egg muffin sandwich with bacon, donut, coffee

From a local chain, quite impressed.  It was hot, fresh and delicious.  Would eat again, though it's not often convenient.  Donut from local bakery, excellent.

Lunch:  Grilled ham and cheese, fries with ketchup, coffee

Diner life.

Dinner:  Sous vide tri tip finished in butter, Meijer organic hash browns in butter, Green Giant brussels sprouts roasted in olive oil

Hash browns were a poor choice.
Pretty decent.  The steak was good.  I ate maybe 1/4 of the hash browns - Alexia has ruined other hash browns for me (the store was out last time I went).  First time having sprouts, they were fine just a little mushy.  Seems like they'd be better crisp.

Exercise:  45 minutes.  Got my butt kicked again.

Epic McFail

Wednesday, January 25, 2017

All 3 meals were McMeals.  How awful is that?

On the plus side I did make time to restock the freezer with quality local meat raised the right way, so when I get this ship turned around I have stuff on hand.

Horrible.

No exercise either.

Saturday, January 21, 2017

Worst day of eating ever?  Dunno, but it'd be in the conversation.

Lunch, Dinner, etc:  A melange of fast food - chick fil a, freddy's, McD and capped off by a late night run to the Bell.

Eight zillion calories of awful.

Exercise:  Nope.

Horrible.

It was icy outside and I slept in.  It's what I had on hand.

Range Hood Envy

Tuesday, January 10, 2017

Apathetic.

I am just apathetic and pathetic right now.  Not interested by anything.  Especially work.  And diet.  Cooking.  Ugh.

Also, as the title would indicate, I'm envious of those who have range hoods.  I'd love to do a nice steak, but I can't really sear it since it's cold outside.  No range hood, can't do it inside.  Setting off the sprinkler system would be an unqualified disaster of the highest order.  So I just live with the envy.

Breakfast:  Egg McMuffin, Sausage McGriddles (BOGO coupon), coffee

Lunch:  Grilled ham and cheese, fries with ketchup, coffee

Diner life.

Dinner:  2 little cheeseburgers, fries with ketchip, a bit of leftover tuna biscuit casserole

Exercise:  40 minutes, lots of arms and shoulders with some cardio elements.  Worked hard.

Continued Joy Of Weekend ... Until End of Weekend

Sunday, January 8, 2017

I sometimes wonder what it would be like to not have the feeling of needing to rush in to work just as fast as possible after I drag myself out of bed.  No feeling of guilt over eating breakfast (even if it's drive thru), no worry about whether I took too much time doing something as innocuous as making the bed (which takes 30 seconds).  I imagine that it feels a lot like a winter weekend morning.

Sure I have plenty of things I want an need to do.  But I don't feel rushed to do them.  It's a nice feeling.

Breakfast:  2 eggs over medium, 4 strips Wright bacon, Alexia hash browns in butter, coffee

Note to self, buy this bacon when it's on sale.
Regular price of $9/pkg!
Only a 9/10.  Bacon was perfect again, hash browns terrific, eggs just a fraction overdone.  I need to use a bit more butter and a notch less on the heat - plus be willing to let the yolks be more on the runny side.  That's infinitely better than overcooked whites.

Also:  Pillsbury cinnamon rolls, more coffee

Lunch:  Leftover deluxe pizza, some Meijer ranch dorito type chips

Dinner:  Tuna biscuit sandwich, 1/2 grilled cheese, tomato and chicken noodle soup, salad with rance, 12 oz Miller Lite.

Ate way too much.  Guh.

Exercise:  Not really, but I was pretty active and moved some stuff.  I could count it.

Joy of Weekend

Saturday, January 7, 2017

So good to be in the relaxed state of mind that comes with it being a weekend.  Sure, I have a bunch to do.  But I could sleep in, fix a nice breakfast, have several leisurely cups of coffee, that sort of thing.  Very nice.

It wasn't a good week on the eating front, but given that I'm quite fat it didn't make a lot of difference weight-wise.  I do need to get on track though, the longer this holiday bulge sticks around the harder it is to lose it.

Breakfast:  2 eggs over medium, 3 strips Wright bacon, Alexia hash browns in (measured) butter, coffee

Glorious.  This is the perfect breakfast combo.
Standard.  Delicious as always.

Lunch:   Five Guys little cheeseburger all the way plus jalapeno, little cajun fries with ketchup

I enjoy this way too much.
Time to stop doing this.  Tasty though.

Dinner:   Half of a 12" deluxe pizza, garlic cheese bread with pizza sauce.

Curious cheese choice, but still tasty.
Need to stop doing this too.  Too bad.

Exercise:  Nope.  Did do some shopping, but it doesn't really count.

Is Losing Battle With Inertia

Tuesday, January 3, 2016

Back to work, back to struggling.  Too bad, I always have hope that I'll break through and lose the HUNGER.  Mornings aren't a huge problem.  I'm ready to eat come lunch but not ravenous.  Today, when I left work, I was famished.  Didn't want to wait, even for ten minutes of reheating on the beans.  So bad habits won.  Sigh.

Breakfast:  Egg McMuffin, coffee

New photo.  Not any more interesting than the old photo.
Not their finest effort, call it 4/10.  Just not well prepared.  Still edible and a fine breakfast.  I might have to go back to salami and cheese though, I'd save money.

Lunch:  Jimmy Johns #5 (ham, cheese, LTMayo), salt and vinegar chips, pickle

No photo, forgot.  Lunch at the desk.

Dinner:  Taco Bell beef quesarito, chips and queso

Sorriest chips ever, hardly got any.  Not even enough to finish the queso!  No photo, devoured.

More dinner:  Spicy beans with a bunch of leftover ham

I've missed you spicy beans.
Even with 6x jalapenos they aren't real spicy.  I may have to try some hotter peppers or add a bunch of cayenne or something.  Still pretty good.

Exercise:  40 minutes, cardio, arms and shoulders.  Solid workout.

Simmering, Boil Unlikely

Monday, January 2, 2016

Final day of the holiday season.  As usual I am going to run out of time before even coming close to accomplishing everything on my "to do" list.   Oh well, that's how it goes.  I want stuff to be done NOW, but when you work at a decidedly leisurely pace like I do things take a while.  It's no wonder that I'm lousy at long term stuff like diet.

I have a pot of spicy beans underway, I guess that means I'm going to stick around home today.  I debated doing them in the slow cooker, but decided to stay with the tried-and-true method.

Breakfast:  2 eggs over medium in butter, 4 strips Wright applewood smoked bacon, Alexia hash browns in butter, coffee

Still using the lower res, seems to make no difference.
The gold standard.  If yesterday was 11/10, today was only 9.9 - the eggs may have been on for ten seconds too long.  I'm satisfied that this is the Cadillac of bacon, two days in a row it's been perfectly crisp-tender, the flavor profile is right, it's just delicious.   Of course I need to cut back to 2 strips (or maybe 3 if go easy on the butter) since it's twice the thickness and twice the calories of regular bacon...

Lunch:  Leftover deluxe pizza, some cheezits

Cheezits not pictured.
Done with the cheez its.  The bad stuff is getting weeded out.  Slowly.

Dinner: Ham, scalloped potatoes, corn, roll with butter, pecan pie with vanilla ice cream, 12 oz Miller Lite, mini chocolate haagen dazs cup.

Not all of the damage.
Excessive.  Quite so.

Exercise:  Puttered around a lot, but not really.

New Year Not The Same As Old Year

Sunday, January 1, 2017

How long will it take before writing "2017" becomes a habit I wonder.

Despite a so-so night of sleep (and I didn't even have a drop of alcohol) feeling pretty good this morning.  I wasn't up early enough to get in a pre-dawn walk, I may need to go walk around a mall or something for a while.  Anyway, starting resolutions on January 1 has always seemed pointless - there are always parties and bowl games and other nonsense that make it seem like suffering.  And I'm (duh) not into suffering.

Some squad goals for January:  Down 15 pounds.  Ambitious, but eminently doable given the weight I've picked up the last couple weeks.  A good flush of excess water is probably good for half of that.  Also, get in some sort of movement every single day.  Even if it's just a 15 or 20 minute walk.  Every day.  Coincident to the first goal is to eat out less.  I'm not going to stop entirely, just less.  It would be great to shave a hundred bucks off my monthly food budget.

Breakfast:  2 eggs over medium in butter, 4 strips Wright applewood bacon, Alexia hash browns in (measured) butter, coffee

What perfection looks like, pre-seasoning.
If I could give this an 11/10 I would.  Absolutely NAILED it.  Eggs perfect, just on the easy side of medium.  Bacon superlative, crisp-tender.  Hash browns seasoned up and A++.

Something super random:  I used a christmas gift card to buy a Keurig for the office, which should come next week.  I think I'll probably end up using that during the week (instead of having coffee at home) and just use the drip pot when I have time to have a couple of leisurely cups.  It will be interesting to see if I get addicted to the convenience to the point where I think I should have one at home too -- I hope not, since I just bought this new drip machine!

Lunch:  Five Guys little cheeseburger, little cajun fries with ketchup

Testing a lower resolution photo, this is a much smaller
file when I email it to myself.
Least busy I've ever seen 5G.  I guess lots of people resolve not to eat as many burgers and fries.  And they start January 1, not later!

Dinner:  Half of a 12" deluxe pizza, garlic bread with cheese and pizza sauce

Caloric.  So very caloric.

Tried a new place.  Good but not great.  Still delicious.  Still not going to be happening after the weekend.

Also:  Some cheez its.

Exercise:  Eh, not especially.  Did a bunch of shopping and moved around a bunch assembling a furniture item.  I guess I'll count it, though it's pretty weak.
