71.6

Wednesday, November 28, 2012

I didn't have any good post titles in the first place, so why not throw some numbers up in there?  A little tired this morning, on reflection I was thinking 98.6, the song.  The awful awful song.  Whatever.

Got up super early today, alarm went off at 4:45.  Not sure that's going to stick.  On the plus side I felt great during my walk - no aches or pains, no tightness, not even any fatigue despite staying up until 11:30 due to a late night of IT work at the office.  On the down side I'm already sleepy again and was poky getting going so I'm not getting the full advantage of the early start.  If I can get to bed at a reasonable hour tonight maybe I'll do it again tomorrow and get more out of it.  More than anything else I desperately want some "quiet time" at the office when nobody's around and I don't have to deal with phone calls so that I can get things done.

Breakfast:  1 oz hard salami, 2 slices Kraft big slice sharp cheddar cheese, ~ 4 oz Meijer organics vegetable juice, coffee.  Once again did not bother with a picture, this isn't exactly hard to imagine and the quantities are pretty exact.

Lunch:  Hamburger on toast with sliced ham, swiss and grilled onions, french fries, coffee

Dinner:  Little Caesars pepperoni pizza

Exercise:  Did the big loop this morning, 1.2 miles, 22 minutes.  As mentioned above, felt great.

Heavily Salted

Tuesday, November 27, 2012

Continue to swing between optimistic and despairing.  Might be bipolar.

Breakfast:  1 oz hard salami, 2 slices Kraft big slice sharp cheddar, ~ 4 oz Meijer organics vegetable juice, coffee

Meijer brand is tastier than regular V8, possibly because it has more salt.

Lunch:  3 egg omelet with Kraft mexican blend cheese, pickled jalapenos and sour cream, leftover spicy pinto beans, coffee

Eggs.  And stuff.
This was OK.  It wasn't special though.

Snack:  Popcorn.  Must be I didn't get enough salt with lunch.

Dinner:  Deluxe pizza.  Yergh.

Exercise:  Abbreviated walk this morning, just 3/4 of a mile, 15 minutes.

Close, Not So Close

Monday, November 26, 2012

Felt good in the morning, felt hungry by dinner time.

Breakfast:  1 oz hard salami, 2 slices Kraft big slice sharp cheddar, coffee

I took a picture of this but it's not worth posting.

Lunch:  Western omelet with 2 slices rye toast, coffee

Ugh, toast had some kind of vegetable oil spread on it and they used cooking spray when doing the omelet.  I've really become sensitive to those things and don't enjoy the taste at all.  Give me butter, real butter.

Dinner:  Domino's pizza pepperoni, bacon and onion

Hungry.  Did I mention hungry?

Snack:  2 leftover oatcakes

Exercise:  Morning walk, about 1.2 miles.

Mileage May Vary

Sunday, November 25, 2012

I've never been all that certain of the accuracy of pedometer, but I thought it was amusing that my walk clocked in this morning at 1.15 miles vs 1.22 yesterday ... for the exact same loop.

Last day of a long, fantastic weekend.  I really need to grind it out at work over the next couple of weeks so that I can afford to do this again.

Project of the day is to do a little menu planning to think up some dishes that can be frozen for later consumption.  I picked up some glass snapware at Menards yesterday with the idea that if I had more dinners ready to go - out of freezer in the AM, fridge to pot to table in the PM - it would help cut down on the urge to get takeout.  I know today is going to have some issues, but I think I'm going to try to refocus starting in the morning.  Protein, fat and vegetables.  A little fruit.  Less, less, less starch.  And keep up the exercise.  It's not rocket science.

Breakfast:  Leftover oatcakes, 4 slices CF bacon, coffee

Not the same as yesterday ... no blueberries.
I ate half a batch of the oatcakes yesterday and half today, in the past I've eaten 1/3 of a batch at a time.  I think I want to scale the recipe down so that I eat the smaller quantity without accumulating leftovers in the freezer -- these do have a fair amount of starch so they should remain a weekend-only treat.

Lunch:  Salad (Mesclun mix I got at the farmer's market last week) with homemade dressing (basic dressing from Nourishing Traditions, dijon mustard, red wine vinegar, olive oil, plus italian seasoning, salt, pepper).  Bowl of spicy pinto beans (from the Pioneer Woman recipe site), leftover homemade crescent rolls, a couple glasses Chateau Ste Michelle reisling wine.

Despite being past its prime, the lettuce was quite fine

Spicy, but not all that spicy.  Maybe should add cayenne?
All pretty good.  I have lots of beans left, going to try freezing them.

Snack:  Chips and onion dip.  Crackers, bar cheeze, cheese, celery with ranch dip, olives

Dinner:  Italian sub, garlic cheese bread.

Exercise:  Morning walk of 1.15 miles, working around the house.  Didn't add up to much more.

Berry

Saturday, November 24, 2012

Good mood today.  Got up early, I've accomplished quite a bit and I'm motivated to keep checking things off the list.

Breakfast:  Blueberry oatcakes with a small pat of butter, 4 slices CF applewood bacon with pepper, coffee

Best weekend meal ever or best meal ever?
Lunch:  2 double cheeseburgers, fries

Snack:  Chips and onion dip.  Finished 'em off, let's see if I can avoid buying more.

Dinner:  Qdoba naked burrito with steak, rice, pinto beans, pico, hot salsa, cheese & sour cream

Exercise:  Nice walk this morning 1.25 miles.  I've also done some shopping and a bunch of yard work - I still have the pedometer on, I kinda expect to hit 6 or 7 miles by the time it's all said and done.

A Day After

Friday, November 23, 2012

Sluggish this morning.  I slept well and hard, probably could have used more.  I got up at the usual time and have been putzing around.  Thank goodness for a day off.

I've been slacking big time on the eating again.  Today's probably going to be pretty lousy as well but hopefully with the extra time I can get the kitchen cleaned up and some meals organized.  Lack of time and preparation really seem to be the biggest obstacles I have to complete dietary success.  Also, I think I might need to put the taco salad dinner back in the budget.

Breakfast:  Leftover oatcakes, 4 slices CF bacon, coffee

Applewood smoked bacon this time, I added pepper.
Fantastic as always.

Lunch:  2 Culver's double deluxe burgers, chips and onion dip

Dinner:  Deluxe pizza

Exercise:  Nothing meaningful.  Did a ton of stuff around the house and some shopping, but as per usual nothing I can point to as exercise.  Also:  I need to do some strength training, particularly upper body.

Much Thanks

Thursday, November 22, 2012

I'm grateful for many things, far too many to list.  One that's worth mentioning is that I get to eat amazing food.  Huge spread for Thanksgiving and I didn't even eat half of the items on offer.  I also skipped dessert.

Breakfast:  2 Mcdonalds sausage burritos, coffee

Snack:  Chips and onion dip

Dinner:  Thanksgiving feast - turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, green bean casserole, crescent rolls with butter (I had 2 plates), white wine (Reisling, 3 glasses)

I ate just enough to be really full without suffering.  Everything was so delicious.

Exercise:  18 holes, walking, plus tons of Thanksgiving-related work.  I was dead tired come 9:00 pm, earned an awful lot of those calories.

Roller Coaster Moods

Monday, November 19, 2012

I'm up, I'm down, I'm up when I should be down, I have no ****ing idea.

At the moment, down.  I'm a little too invested in something that I know is unrealistic, even fantastically unlikely.  I'll get over it.

Breakfast:  1 oz hard salami, 2 slices Kraft big slice sharp cheddar, coffee

Lunch:  2 eggs scrambled in a bit of butter, 4 slices bacon, leftover oatcakes, 1/2 grapefruit, coffee

Dinner:  Big Mac, daily double, chips and onion dip

Exercise:  Quick walk this morning, just 15 minutes, 0.75 mile.

WHAT THE ****

Sunday, November 18, 2012

Seriously, WHAT THE ***.  I woke up this morning at THREE THIRTY and could not get back to sleep.  I tried for almost an hour, then I got up.

I don't get it.  I never, ever, ever get up early if I do not need to do so.  The only time I wake up in the night is due to leg cramps (and I always go back to sleep) or needing to hit the bathroom (ditto).

This is very confusing.

On the plus side, I got a ton of stuff done already and it's only 10:30 -- I cleaned some carpets, made lasagna, did some shopping and have a pot of stew nearly done.  Maybe the early bird really does get that worm.

Pre-breakfast:  Pumpkin bread with butter, coffee

One of my favorite baked goods.  No, I did not eat the whole thing.
I got a mini-loaf at the farmer's market yesterday (along with a ton of other good stuff).  I ate a decent chunk of it with some coffee, decided I wasn't quite ready to fix breakfast yet.

Breakfast:  2 eggs fried in a bit of butter, 4 strips bacon with pepper, coffee

Egg picture #3512
Cooking the eggs at a lower temperature really does produce better results.  These were a solid over medium.  Peppering the bacon is also a solid move.

Lunch:  A bowl of lamb stew, more pumpkin bread with butter

Hot stew -> blurry picture...
I just used my basic beef stew recipe (carrots, celery, potato, onion, parsley, seasoning) and subbed lamb for the beef.  Quite good, though I do wonder if the lamb might benefit from a longer, slower cook.  It was a bit on the chewy side.  Let's call it 8/10.

Snack:  2 oz CF cajun beef jerky, bloody mary

Dinner:  Lasagna with garlic toast, green beans with cheddar cheese

Snack:  Chips and onion dip

Exercise:  18 holes with cart, usual weekend stuff

Correlated

Saturday, November 17, 2012

Yeah, I've noticed that when I slack on posting it's usually because I'm eating badly.  On a more positive note I went to the farmer's market this morning and got TONS of good food.

Breakfast:  Blueberry oatcakes, 3 strips bacon, coffee

Now with 100% more blueberries!!
I added a few frozen blueberries to my last batch of oatcakes - I let them thaw for 15 or 20 minutes while I was doing prepping and cooking the rest of them, that's it.  Turned out very nice.

Lunch/Snack:  ~ 2 oz CF cajun beef jerky, chips and onion dip, 12 oz Miller Lite

Dinner:  Deluxe pizza

Exercise:  18 holes with cart, lots of walking.  At last check I was over 7 miles for the day and I'm still likely to do a little around the house before bedtime.

Friday, November 16, 2012

Breakfast:  2 Mcdonalds bacon, egg and cheese biscuits (one w/o bacon), coffee

Lunch:  2 Taco Bell chicken burritos, steak chalupa

Dinner:  Italian sub, garlic cheese bread

Snack:  Chips and onion dip

Exercise:  About a mile in the morning, a nice little walk.  Didn't jog, lower back tightness.

Thursday, November 15, 2012

Breakfast:  2 slices sharp cheddar cheese, coffee

Lunch:  2 double cheeseburgers, fries

Dinner:  Little Caesars pepperoni pizza

Exercise:  Quick AM walk, about 3/4 of a mile.  Jogged 2.5 blocks.

Sky Pilot

Wednesday, November 14, 2012

Who says post titles have to mean anything?

Rough start to the day.  Stayed up way too late last night, could not seem to disengage from the electronic gizmos.  I kept searching for stuff online.  Dumb.  The result was I slept through my alarm, was way off schedule and sluggishly fast-forwarded through a bunch of stuff.

Breakfast:  Coffee.

I realized as I was driving to work that I forgot to eat anything.  Oops.  This will not end well, I may need to run home and grab something.

Lunch:  Italian beef sandwich, fries

Dinner:  Deluxe pizza

Exercise:  I tried to talk myself out of it but logic ultimately prevailed, I would feel better if I did something, even for a few minutes.  So I got in just under 0.75 mile in about 12 minutes.  I did manage to jog the last 2+ blocks but it was very slow and I wasn't terribly happy to do it - for one thing it's easier when it's still dark and people aren't out in force.  For another, the legs were tighter than usual.  I plan to watch that (and any signs of knee pain) like a hawk and back right off if there are problems.

Jogged

Tuesday, November 13, 2012

Wait, what?

I'm on a relatively good streak of getting out of bed in the morning and getting into some exercise.  Today is like four weekdays in a row!  Even better, I tried something a little different - I actually jogged the last block and half of my walk.  I did not run.  Running might be possible but it would probably be painful, when you're this heavy it's murder on your joints.  I jogged.  Cautiously.  Probably nothing faster than a 12 or 13 minute mile pace (maybe I'll time it one of these days) and it was only a block and a half, no more than a couple hundred yards.  But I jogged.  And it didn't hurt (at least it hasn't so far).

Maybe tomorrow I'll try two and a half blocks.

Breakfast:  1 oz genoa salami, 2 slices Kraft Big Slice sharp cheddar, coffee

Once again forgot to take a photo.  It was the same as the stock photo down the page.  I'll have to take a new photo next time, assuming that I get more, since it'll be a different kind of salami.

Lunch:  3 egg omelet with bacon, cream cheese and avocado; sausage; coffee

Another standard, no picture.

Dinner:  Deluxe pizza.  Oops.

Having pizza and continuing to work just doesn't work.

Snack:  Chips and onion dip.  Yeah.

Exercise:  Morning walk, 1.25 miles, just over 20 minutes.  Not taxing.  As mentioned above I jogged the last block and a half.

Succumbed Again

Monday, November 12, 2012

As usual, I ate too much yesterday.  And then I stayed up too late.  There are just not enough hours in the weekend.  At least today is a semi-holiday, not that I get the day off or anything.

Breakfast:  1 oz genoa salami, 2 slices Kraft Big Slice sharp cheddar cheese, coffee

No picture, I forgot.  I even had the phone out to do it (not that it's exciting) but I reflexively ate before remembering.  Oops.  Also, when I went to the store this weekend it looked like they stopped carrying the kind of salami I've been buying.  I'm generally in favor of buying stuff that's made in the USA, but given what I'm learning about agricultural practices I think I'd rather take my chances with an Italian brand than with some domestic brand with faux-italian packaging (which appears to be the replacement).

Lunch:  2 eggs fried in a bit of butter, 3 strips Tyson bacon, 1 small organic avocado, 1/2 medium grapefruit, coffee.

These:  A few of my favorite things
It's still way too early for quality grapefruit, but they were a bit more appealing than the orange-size summer fruits I've seen lately so I went for one.  Otherwise, standard stuff.  I cooked the eggs at a lower temperature and I thought they turned out better so I'm going to give that another shot.  Better is always better.

Dinner:  Hamburger gravy (CF grass-fed ground beef, frozen diced onion, brown rice flour, spices, 2% milk), 1 large and 1/2 small organic russet potatoes boiled and mashed with a bit of butter and a couple tablespoons of 2% milk.  Oh, and I ate 3 pepperocinis out of the jar while I was cooking.

Not visually appealing but delicious none the less
They were out of whole milk at the health food store the other day so I settled for 2%.  This is a bit too carby, making a gravy out of the meat is probably unnecessary.  It sure is good however.  Leftovers remain for tomorrow night, maybe I'll have more ambition and fix a salad too.

Exercise:  Since I was so late getting up, I had very little time.  I did squeeze in 15 minutes which got me exactly 3/4 of a mile (I'm amazingly good at maintaining a consistent 3 mph pace.  I'm slow.)

Experiments In Sleep

Sunday, November 11, 2012

I kinda miss the day counter.  Maybe I'll bring it back in January when it'll be easy to figure.

Sluggish this morning.  I slept well, I think, but was still dragging when I got up and it took a while to get going.  I did push it pretty hard yesterday.  The usual shower/breakfast/coffee combination has helped and I'm looking forward to a busy day again today.

I don't think I've mentioned it yet, but I've been experimenting with hard surface sleeping.  I'm so fed up with my crappy old mattress that I determined to try not sleeping on it.  So far so good - the first night wasn't terribly restful, but that was due to sinus issues more than anything else.  Since then I've felt pretty decent in the mornings (today being the "worst", probably).

Breakfast:  Leftover oatcakes, 5 slices Tyson bacon, coffee.

I could eat this for breakfast every day.
I didn't need that much bacon, but that's what was left in the package (said the fat kid).  It was good.

Lunch:  Leftover ham and beans.

I'm not going to go back and look at yesterday, but if I didn't already mention it the grocery store ham slice was grossly inferior to the one I got from a local farmer.  I definitely want to get another one of those soon.  I did take a picture of this, so if I remember I can insert it later.  It's a bowl of beans, with ham.

Snack:  ~ 2 oz CF cajun beef jerky, 12 oz Miller Lite, Bloody Mary with pickle spear and 2 olives

Dinner:  2 hot dogs with bun, 1+ beef brat with bun, salad with zesty italian dressing

Snack:  Chips and onion dip

Exercise:  18 holes with cart, moderate extra walking.  Not as much exercise as yesterday, didn't have the same level of pep.  I want to say by the end of the day the pedometer was at 6.5 miles or so.

Partly Foggy

Saturday, November 10, 2012

Sure glad the workweek is over.  The weekend is off to a good start - woke up about 5:00 and couldn't go back to sleep so I got up and knocked a couple things off the endless to do list.  A rarity indeed!  Key items on today's agenda:  Cook a bunch of beans I've had soaking, do some yard work, maybe watch a little football.  Should be a nice day.

Breakfast:  Oatcakes, 3 slices Tyson bacon with some pepper, coffee

I eat the last oatcakes I make ... using up the batter tends to mean
that they are a little bigger...
To jazz in up I cracked a little pepper on the bacon while it was cooking.  It was a nice touch.  I do need to pick up some more local bacon, though.  As usual I made enough oatcakes for three servings and tossed the other two in the freezer.  Love those things and they are so easy.

Snack:  ~ 2 oz CF cajun beef jerky, coffee, 12 oz Miller Lite

Lunch:  2 eggs, fried in a bit of butter, 3 strips bacon, ~ 2 small organic potatoes, mashed (leftover), 1 small organic avocado

I've never had eggs for lunch before in my life.  Sincerely, Bill Clinton.
Bacon twice in one day?  How could that be anything other than delicious?

Dinner:  Ham and great northern beans

With plenty of pepper, yum!
Snack:  Chips and onion dip.  FML.  I even went to the grocery store *after* dinner.

Exercise:  18 holes with cart, lots of extra walking.  A couple hours of yard work.  Throw in some grocery shopping and the pedometer says 8.33 miles today.  That's not too shabby.

Hope: Good, Even In Small Doses

Friday, November 9, 2012

A second consecutive pretty good day.  I even saved a not-so-good dinner situation, more on that in a moment.

For reasons that don't really need to be explored, I have a bit more hope today.  I was a little down earlier this week but got a needed boost this afternoon.  Not enough to create expectations, just enough to ensure that the flicker of hope remains alive.  Hope is such a good thing.

Breakfast:  1 oz genoa salami, 2 slices Kraft Big Slice sharp cheddar cheese, coffee

No picture today, as I ate the food portion after having some blood drawn this morning.  Same as yesterday though.

Lunch:  3 egg omelet with bacon, cream cheese and avacado; sausage; coffee

The old standby.  I forgot to take a picture.  Doh.  I've posted it before.

Dinner:  2 eggs fried in a bit of butter, 4 strips Tyson bacon, ~ 2 smaller medium organic russet potatoes mashed with a little 2% milk and butter.  Salad with iceberg, cucumber, Ro-Tel and pepperocinis.  Newmans Own olive oil dressing.

I was planning on making hamburger gravy and got the potatoes started ... and then I decided I didn't like the smell of the ground beef.  It may well have been fine but I've been pretty careless with food safety lately -- I even ate at Taco Bell, much to my regret.  So anyway I pitched the meat and scrounged around for some kind of protein to have with the potatoes.  I didn't have much thawed, just a ham slice I plan to cook with beans this weekend.  Eggs to the rescue.  I also fried up and chopped some bacon, I just had grocery store bacon since I haven't been by the farm lately.  Need to head out there soon I think for a few items.

The first course, of course

I don't usually eat this many eggs in a day, but these were sure perfect
For the weekend I have two kinds of beans soaking, going to make a couple pots and try freezing them.  If I were to be really ambitious (and this probably requires going to the farm) I could make stew also...  Oh, and oatcakes ... and who knows what else!

Exercise:  ZOMG two mornings in a row.  Another walk, just over 2 miles this time according to the pedometer, about 40 minutes so I think that's about right.  Got some new shoes, they seemed to work just fine, though I won't be taking them out in the winter, they're mesh like tennis shoes.  Just puttering around the house tonight after a long week.

Yeah, feeling pretty good about things at the moment.  Still realistic (i.e. still fat), but optimistic.  Oh, and I weighed myself this morning and I'm trending back in the right direction.  Still a few pounds over the low but moving back down.

New Boot

Thursday, November 8, 2012

Trying again to get refocused.  I had some time yesterday to get the kitchen picked up, so a little progress there.

Breakfast:  1 oz hard salami, 2 slices Kraft Big Slice sharp cheddar cheese, coffee

The breakfast of non-champions
Grab and go, didn't have anything else planned out.  It'll do.

Lunch:  2 eggs, scrambled and cooked in a bit of butter, 2 leftover oatcakes, 1 small organic avocado.  Coffee.

Eggs.  Eggs.  Eggs.  Oh, and other stuff.
Basics.  Concerned this might be a bit light on protein but I think I'll be OK.  I should probably not have the starch of the oatcakes either but I think I'll be OK for the day.

Dinner:  CF grass-fed ribeye steak, salad (iceberg, cucumber, Ro-Tel and a couple pepperocinis) with Newman's Own olive oil dressing

Food pr0n

Steak was chillin in the fridge (vacuum sealed) for who knows how long.  Too long.  If I die or get deathly ill in the next few hours you'll know it was due to poor food safety.  It smelled and tasted fine so I went for it.  Cooked it 25 minutes in the oven, finished on a hot grill.  Mediocre crust and a bit overdone but still delicious.

Snack:  Wavy Lays potato chips

Other than the chips (which I'm eating as I type this), it was a pretty good day.  I think I need to subscribe to the adage "if you don't have it lying around you won't eat it you dumbass".  I think Ben Franklin said that.

Exercise:  How about that, I got in a morning walk.  About 2.5 miles I believe, took about 50 minutes.  There were a few nice hills so I was quite awake by the time I finished.  I don't know if this will become a trend (especially once the snow flies) but it felt pretty good.
